The national fine art of Kazakhstan is deeply rooted in the ancient traditions of folk art, applied art. The end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century - the initial frontier of the formation and rapid development of new forms of fine art - painting, sculpture, graphics, is inextricably linked with the name of Nikolai Khludov. Brought up on the traditions of Russian realistic painting, the artist came to Kazakhstan at the end of the nineteenth century, in 1921 he headed a studio where he studied with a group of young artists. The grateful memory of his teacher was preserved by the first Kazakh artist, the founder of professional Kazakh fine art, painter and graphic artist Abylkhan Kasteev.
In the mid-1930s, the Union of Artists of Kazakhstan was created, the first Art Gallery was opened. A great contribution to the formation of the national school of fine arts was made by Russian artists Nikolai Krutilnikov, Abram Cherkassky, Leonid Leontiev, Baki Urmanche, who for many years linked their fate with Kazakhstan and conquered by the beauty of Kazakhstan's nature and the creative talent of the people. In the 1950s and 1960s, a new generation of bright, gifted masters of painting, graphics, sculpture, who were educated at the best universities in Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov, and Kiev, joined the artistic life of the country. Moldakhmet Kenbayev, Sabur Mambeev, Khakimzhan Nauryzbayev, Uki Azhiev, Kamil Shayakhmetov, Evgeny Sidorkin, Zhanatai Shardenov, Salihitdin Aitbayev created works that have become classics of Kazakh art.
The best works from the first regional exhibition of Kostanay artists and masters of applied arts in 1938 marked the beginning of the art collection of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore, now numbering about 4 thousand works. The collection of works by leading artists of the republic, transferred in 1962 by the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of the city of Alma-Ata, is considered to be the pearl of museum funds. In these works, as in a mirror, the entire history of the fine arts of Kazakhstan is reflected.
In 1995, the museum's funds were replenished with paintings and graphic works by famous Kazakhstani and Kostanay artists, as well as masters of Russia, Ukraine, Transcaucasia, transferred by the Kostanay branch of the Soviet Cultural Foundation.
