Bust of twice Hero of the Soviet Union Leonid Ignatievich Beda

Leonid Ignatievich Beda (1920-1976) was born in the village of Novo-Pokrovka in the Leninsky (now Uzunkolsky) district of the Kostanay region. 

Since 1940 in the ranks of the Soviet Army. He graduated from the Chkalov Military Aviation School. During the Great Patriotic War, he began his service as a pilot, at the end of the war – an assistant commander of an assault aviation regiment. He made 214 sorties.

Leonid Ignatievich Bede was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 26, 1944 for his courage and bravery shown in battles with the enemy.

On June 29, 1945, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the Guards Major L.I. Bedu with the second Gold Star medal.

In December 1976, Lieutenant General L.I. Beda was killed in a car accident.

In 1951, a monument to twice Hero of the Soviet Union Leonid Ignatievich Bede was erected on Victory Square in the city of Kostanay (now the square near the building of the city Akimat). The sculptor is Dmitry Petrovich Schwartz.

Description of the monument

Location: Kostanay city, Pushkin Street, 98

The bust is made of bronze, mounted on a conical granite pedestal. L.I. Bede is depicted in a military uniform with all the insignia and a set of awards. Bust height – 70 cm, pedestal – 2.5 m.

On the pedestal there is a memorial plaque with an inscription in Russian containing information about the awarding of the Hero of the Soviet Union L.I. Bede with the second Gold Star medal.
